Computational Geometry

The CG Society has the goal to promote scientific research in Computational Geometry and Computational Topology by organizing the free, international exchange of knowledge, experience, and ideas in these research areas. Only active members of the Society can attend Society events, and only members can give a presentation. Society membership is free (register here).

All members of the Society are bound by its Code of Conduct. The Code of Conduct covers all activities pertaining to the organization of a CG Society event. The Code of Conduct committee (CCC) of the Society adjudicates cases of potential Code of Conduct violations. Based on the findings of the CCC, the board of the society can suspend or terminate membership for members found guilty of Code of Conduct violations.

History

Scientific events should support the open exchange of ideas in a respectful and inclusive atmosphere. Unfortunately, that has not always been the case. Over the years there have been several (sexual) harassment incidents at Computational Geometry events and more generally within the area of theoretical computer science. In 2019, the community decided that CG Week joins SafeTOC and adopted a Code of Conduct for CG Week that all conference attendees agree to follow upon registration. Sadly, experience with past events has shown that adopting the Code of Conduct alone was not sufficient since we lacked a legal basis for its enforcement.

The CG Week Steering Committee installed a task force (Anne Driemel, Herman Haverkort, Ivor van der Hoog, and Patrick Schnider) which considered options to create such a legal foundation and presented their findings at CG Week 2022. Their proposal was to a establish a society with a membership structure including procedures for dealing with violations of the Code of Conduct. In August 2022 a community vote on Belenios decided to establish such a society. At the request of the Steering Committee, Herman Haverkort, Marc van Kreveld, Bettina Speckmann, and Frank Staals set up the Society, which was founded in the Netherlands on May 24, 2024. Starting in 2025, both EuroCG and CG Week will be organized as events of the CG Society.
